This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (John 17 verse 3 - The Bible)

“I love Jesus” …

By Josh Beckett at 12:32 pm on Thursday, June 28, 2007

… “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”  John 14v15

The 10 commandments?
No.
The Christian has been set free from the bondage of the law.  The Christian has recieved directly from the Son of God the gift of God’s Holy Spirit - enabling them to live in love towards God and their neighbour, just like Christ did, who in so doing fulfilled ‘all the law and the prophets’.
He said, “Come unto me … and I will give you rest … for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11v28-30

So what are His commandments?  … Well, like He said, they are not hard or complicated - and unlike the law given through Moses, I can find only 3.  Contained within them Christ gives to all who will follow Him:
  - a starting place
  - a method
  - a goal
… and the word of motivation (”if ye love me…”)

He commands us to:

3 commandments that in their simplicity sum up ‘all the law & the prophets’ (Matthew 22v36-40).
Are you keeping them?
It’s so easy to say, “I love Jesus” - but, “I love Jesus my Lord carries so much more meaning.  It’s one thing to claim to love him, but do you know and love Him enough to acknowledge Him as your Lord?
I hear you say, “Yes, He’s my Lord and I’m keeping His commandments.”
… Then I must ask - Out of duty? Or in love?
Are you keeping His commandments because you love your Lord - Jesus Christ.

I am aware that while on earth the Lord Jesus gave other commandments (for example, “do this in remembrance of me”), however the 3 listed in the article are the only ones I have found to date that are actually referred to in Scripture as commandments.

No one can be saved by keeping the 10 Commandments “for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:16). However, the born-again child of God is given the desire to please God and is also given the ability to experience victory over sin.

I LOVE JESUS WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL; AND THE ONE THING I KNEW FOR SURE IS THAT MY DAD DID TOO; BUT 4 WEEKS AGO HE COMMITTED SUICIDE AND MY HEART FEELS AS IF SOMEONE CUT A HOLE IN IT. MY DAD WAS TOTALLY AGAINST SUICIDE. I AM STRUGGLING DAILY JUST WONDERING IF HE IS WITH GOD OR NOT. MY MOM AND BROTHER HAD HIM CREMATED AS SOON AS THE AUTOPSY WAS DONE. ME AND MY 2 SISTERS DIDN’T EVEN GET TO SEE HIM. I JUST CAN’T GET ANY CLOSURE, I HAVEN’T BEEN BACK TO WORK YET, I WORK IN THE HOSPITAL.PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO GET SOME CLOSURE. THANKS

Hi Susan,
[Being a personal matter, I have tried contacting you a couple of times by email, but I think we must have an invalid email address. So I am sorry, but I have had to post the comments here. What follows is roughly what I said in the email.]

My deepest condolences to yourself and your family - may the Lord help you to find all the strength, support and encouragement that you need in Him.

I have never been in your situation and so I won’t pretend that I understand what you are going through. As a starting point I would like to give you the very best I can offer - I can’t better the Word of God, and so my first and foremost suggestion is this:

* Go away and read the story of Samson in Judges 13-16.
* Having read the account and considered Samson in all his short-comings and how that the Lord was still able to use him mightily, and having considered the way in which Samson himself missed out on the feelings of joy and fulfillment that should have been his through serving the Lord; turn over to Hebrews 11 and read about the men and women that God sees fit to record in His word as ‘Those who lived by Faith’ - and who in so doing ‘pleased God’. When you get to verse 32 - rejoice with me at the grace and mercy of a loving God, who wanted Samson’s name to be in that amazing chapter of faith.

I can’t better God’s testimony of a man who’s life ended in suicide. I cannot claim to know where any individual stands (other than myself) when it comes to being right with God, but the Bible teaches the need for repentance towards God and faith in Christ Jesus - if your dad was trusting Christ for his soul’s eternal security, then I’ve no doubt that I’ll meet him in a future day, and I trust you’ll be there too?

With much Christian love,

Josh

PS: If necessary with the Lord’s help I can try to share a number of my own personal experiences with you, in the hope that I can be of some help - but I’m afraid they won’t come close to the Word of God, and I am unable to do so properly without a valid email address.

Hi Susan,
As a late follow-up (and for anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances) - have you tried this site:

Lookup their article on ‘Bereavement due to suicide’.
